04/June/2016 – MVC with Entrapment – “B” Shift Incident # 16-03455 – An adult male received critical injuries in a single vehicle crash at the intersection of ACE Basin Parkway (US Hwy 17) and Pon Pon Plantation Road Saturday afternoon 04-June at 17:23. 9-1-1 received several reports of the accident, advising a pickup truck left the roadway at a high rate of speed and entered a wooded area. The truck was not visible from the highway. A bystander entered the woods and advised the truck was over-turned with the driver trapped inside. Firefighters from Station # 2 arrived within minutes. They noted the vehicle had struck several trees and began stabilizing the truck. Firefighter-Paramedics from Medic 6 entered the damaged vehicle to begin patient care. The driver suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was unconscious following the accident. He did regained consciousness while the extrication was in progress. Crews used cribbing, chains and stabilizers to secure the vehicle, then a chain saw to cut away trees to allow access to the truck. A reciprocating saw was utilized to cut away a portion of the roof. The man was immobilized, then extricated with full spinal precautions. He was transported emergent directly from the scene to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. Two additional Firefighter-Paramedics assisted with his care in Fire-Rescue Medic 6 during the transport. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. |
