09/August/2016 – High Speed MVC – “B” Shift

Incident # 16-05143 – A southbound van drove off of Interstate 95 at the overpass and crashed onto Bells Hwy (SC Hwy 64) Tuesday morning at 08:30.  The driver advised he had been driving all night and fell asleep. When the van left the pavement it entering the median and the driver was awakened. He was able to maneuver the vehicle and avoid striking the guard rail, but collided with the cable barrier taking out about 40 feet of cable, before he ran out of earth. The vehicle became airborne between the north and south bound bridges, cleared the two west bound lanes of Bells Hwy below the Interstate before impacting the guard rail on Bells Hwy. The van suffered heavy damage, but both adult males inside the van received only minor injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics evaluated the patients at the scene. Both denied ambulance transportation to the hospital. A Boa constrictor and turtle in the van did not appear to be injured. West bound traffic on Bells Hwy was blocked for a short period. The Walterboro Police Dept and State Transport Police are investigating the accident.

Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic Brian Bishop served as Incident Commander.
