29/September/2016 – Fatal MVC w/ejection – “B” Shift

Incident # 16-06399 – A 42 year old New Jersey man died from multiple traumatic injuries received in a high speed MVC on Interstate 95 near the 41 mile marker southbound, Thursday morning 29-September. At 09:22, Colleton 9-1-1 Operators began receiving reports of the accident. Callers advised a southbound SUV collided with a tanker truck, then crashed into several trees in the median. The entire left side of the vehicle was ripped from the chassis, ejecting the male driver who had been wearing a seatbelt. A female passenger was also in the car, but received minor injuries. Five cats in the vehicle were also injured. Colleton Firefighter-Paramedics arrived minutes later to find the SUV in the median with heavy damage. An off-duty nurse had stopped to render aid to the injured. The male driver was found on the ground near the SUV with no signs of life. Crews attended to the woman and also treated the felines until Animal Control Officers arrived. The truck driver was not injured and his tanker trailer was empty. One lane of I-95 was blocked due to the accident, causing traffic to back up for four miles.

The Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and transported the male patient. Fire-Rescue Medic 13 transported the female passenger to Colleton Medical Center. The SCHP is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Engine 8, Medic 1, Medic 13, Battalion 1, Car 12, Car 105 and Car 107 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
