09/October/2016 – High Speed Motorcycle MVC – “C” Shift

A 67 year old North Charleston man was critically injured in a two motorcycle MVC in the 16500 block of Augusta Hwy (SC Hwy 61) near Byrd Farm Road, Sunday evening 09-October. Witnesses advised the traffic was heavy, when the motorcycle suddenly locked up his brakes and was struck from behind by a second motorcycle. The driver was ejected into the roadway. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered multiple traumatic injuries, including a head injury. Columbia Firefighters, part of a rescue team deployed to patrol the Edisto River after Hurricane Matthew, were the first to reach the man. A doctor and nurse also stopped to assist. The man was unconscious lying in the roadway. The Columbia crew treated the man, until Colleton Firefighter-Paramedics arrived to the rural location about 15 minutes later. The patient was quickly immobilized and treated at the scene. He was RSIed to secure his airway, then transported emergent with additional Firefighter-Paramedics on board to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical in Summerville. His condition remained critical. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 5, Medic 9, Medic 102, Battalion 2 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
