10/March/2017 – MVC with Entrapment – “A” Shift Incident # 17-01611 – Two men are lucky to be alive
following a high speed tractor trailer MVC on I-95 at the 55 mile marker
northbound, Friday morning 10-March at 06:21. The north bound truck struck
the bridge, then went down an embankment into the median. The vehicle struck
several trees before coming to rest in the swamp. The front of the trailer
failed, propelling the load of cabbage onto the cab, destroying the truck
and trapping the two occupants. A SC Transport Police Officer drove up on
the accident shortly after it occurred and was able to pull one of the
occupants from the wreckage. Firefighter-Paramedics deployed ladders to
reach the second the occupant who was trapped approximately 15 feet above
the ground. Crews dug through mounts of cabbage, then used hand tools to
free the driver. He was extricated with the use of a stokes basket. Both
occupants suffered multiple traumatic injuries and were transported to
Colleton Medical Center. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and
Car 109 responded. Battalion Chief Scott O’Quinn served as Incident
Commander. |
