06/July/2017 – MVC with Air Evac – “C” Shift

Incident # 17-04633 – Four people were injured in two separate MVCs near the 45 mile marker southbound on Interstate 95 south of the Rest Area, Thursday night 06-July at 23:54. The first accident occurred when a southbound Kia Sorento traveling at a high rate of speed, crashed into the rear of a slow moving dump truck who was performing roadwork. The Sorento received heavy damage, severely injuring the unrestrained adult male driver and causing non-life threatening injuries to the female front seat passenger. A medical helicopter was requested for the driver who was thrown through the windshield. The female dump truck driver also complained of injuries, but denied ambulance transportation. Two additional ambulances were assigned to the incident. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the man at the scene while waiting on the helicopter. Medic 13 transported the female patient to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center. C.A.R.E. Flight responded and landed on the Interstate south of the accident. The male patient was transferred to the flight crew, then flown to the Trauma Center at Trident. In the second collision, which occurred shortly after the first, two cars collided as traffic slowed for the first accident. A 13 year old female was transported by Medic 1 to Colleton Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating both crashes. Southbound I-95 in the area of accident was blocked by the wreckage for about 45 minutes. Traffic was light and backed up for approximately 2 miles.

Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 13, Medic 19, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 112 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape and Firefighter-EMT Andy O’Quinn served as Incident Commanders of the two accidents.
