19/August/2017 – Traumatic Injury with Air Evac – “B”
Shift Incident # 17-05760 – A 10 year old male was severely
injured when his right arm was amputated in an accident at Benton’s Peanuts
in the 12700 block of Lowcountry Highway Saturday 19-August. At 12:24,
Colleton 9-1-1 Operators received a call from a woman advising the child’s
arm had been caught in a processing machine and was amputated below the
shoulder. Firefighter-Paramedics on Medic 18 arrived to find the child
sitting in a chair in the parking lot. An adult male was controlling the
bleeding. A medical helicopter had already been requested and responded to a
nearby field at Sniders Crossroads. Crews applied a tourniquet, dressed the
injury with bandages, established IVs and administered pain medications. The
patient was transported the short distance to meet with the C.A.R.E. Flight
helicopter. He was transferred to the Flight crew without incident and flown
to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. Fire-Rescue praised the quick
action of bystanders with controlling the bleeding immediately after the
accident. Their actions contributed in saving the boy’s life. Engine 10, Medic 18, Battalion 1, Car 105 and Car 112
responded. Deputy Chief Dr. David Greene served as Incident Commander. |
