30-August-2017 / Multi-Vehicle MVC / “A” Shift

Incident # 17-06014 – Six vehicles were involved in a crash on I-95 near the 52 mile marker southbound Wednesday evening 30-August. At 19:50, several callers to 9-1-1 reported the multi-vehicle accident, advising one car was overturned. Several Fire-Rescue units had just cleared from an earlier fire approximately 1 mile south and arrived minutes later. Medic 1 arrived to find the Interstate blocked. A tractor trailer carrying a load of fruit drinks was rear ended by a smaller automobile transporter causing heavy damage to the rear and side of the trailer, resulting in several pallets of the product spilling onto the highway. One vehicle from the auto carrier was knocked from the trailer and overturned in the median. A second vehicle was hanging from the side of the trailer. The F-450 truck received a breach in the fuel tank and spilled approximately 15 to 20 gallons of diesel fuel on the highway. Two other vehicles were also damaged and not drivable. Another tractor trailer may have been involved, but left the scene. One driver reported a second tractor trailer. Two people complained of minor injuries and were evaluated by Firefighter-Paramedics at the scene, but did not require ambulance transportation to the hospital. The highway was blocked for several hours. Traffic was diverted to the breakdown lane until the accident was cleared up. The SC Highway Patrol and State Transport Police are investigating the collision.

Engine 1, Tender 1, Medic 1, Battalion 1, car 105, Car 112 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Scott O’Quinn served as Incident Commander.
