11-December-2017 – Farming Accident – “B” Shift Incident # 17-08481 – A 63 yr. old man was injured when
his hand became entangled in a corn picker implement Monday afternoon
11-December. The incident occurred while the man was harvesting corn in a
field off of the 12200 block of Green Pond Hwy. Some corn became lodged in
the machine and the operator tried to pull the stuck corn out of the device
when his glove was caught in the rollers. Fortunately the machine choked
down and shut off. He was able to access his cell phone using his other hand
and called personnel at nearby Wood Brother’s Construction for help. They
responded and also notified 9-1-1. While Fire-Rescue units were enroute,
Wood Brothers employees began searching the fields in the area in an attempt
to locate the man. They found him behind 12225 Green Pond Hwy and were able
to use a prybar to rotate the PTO shaft backward, thus reversing the rollers
and free his hand. The patient suffered a substantial but non-life
threatening injury to his hand. Firefighter-Paramedics treated him at the
scene and transported him to Colleton Medical Center in Medic 6. Engine 6, Medic 6, Rescue 1, Battalion 1 and Car 112
responded. Captain Richie Wood served as Incident Commander. |
