24/January/2018 – Fatal MVC – “C” Shift Incident # 18-00647 - A 57 yr old Bamberg County man
was killed in a single car MVC in the 100 block of Lowcountry Highway
Wednesday morning 24-January. This is the fourth fatal accident to occur in
Colleton County since the beginning of the new year. At 02:36, a truck
driver discovered the over-turned 2000 Mercury passenger car off the roadway
near the wood line. The car received heavy damage. It appeared the car was
southbound on Lowcountry Highway (US Hwy 21) and left the roadway at a high
rate of speed in a curve. The car went down an embankment and struck several
trees before flipping over on its roof. The driver was wearing a seatbelt.
Firefighter-Paramedics from Station 13 located a mile from the scene arrived
minutes later. They found the man still in the car with no signs of life.
The engine block was cool, indicating the accident had occurred earlier in
the morning. The Coroner’s Office was requested and responded to the scene.
A portion of Lowcountry Highway was blocked for an hour during the accident
investigation. The SC Highway Patrol was the investigating agency. Engine 1, Medic 13, Battalion 1 and Car 112 responded.
