30/January/2018 – MVC with HazMat – “C” Shift Incident # 18-00797 – A tractor trailer hauling a
chemical trailer left the roadway and crashed into a creek on I-95
southbound near the 56 mile marker Tuesday morning 30-January at 02:44. The
truck struck the guard rail and bridge before going down the embankment and
jack knifing against a bridge pillar. The insulated trailer struck several
trees causing damage to the trailer. Both diesel tanks were breached
spilling a large amount of diesel fuel on the highway and in the creek. The
injured truck driver was able to self-extricate. He suffered multiple
traumatic injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics lowered an extension ladder from
the bridge to reach the driver. He was brought up the ladder, examined and
decontaminated before being placed in Fire-Rescue Medic 26. No medical
helicopters could fly due fog in the area. The driver was transported
emergent to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston.
Traffic on I-95 in the area of the accident was down to one lane while
emergency responders worked the scene. They cleared up after six hours. A
private HazMat clean-up crew and recovery units were on the scene throughout
the day with the lane remaining closed. Engine 26, Rescue 1, HazMat 19, Ladder 19, Medic 19,
Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 105, Car 112 and Car 118 responded. Deputy Chief
David Greene and Battalion Chief Scott Feather operated the command post. |
