19/April/2019 – MVC with Entrapment – “A” Shift

Incident # 19-02687 – At 20:28, two vehicles collided in the intersection of Jefferies Hwy (US Hwy 15) and Industrial Road Friday evening 19-April during poor weather conditions. Fire-Rescue units arrived to find a pickup truck in the southbound ditch and a Toyota passenger car in the northbound ditch. Bystanders advised the 17 yr. old female driver of the Toyota had been unconscious following the accident. The patient was trapped in the wreckage. The 46 yr. old male driver of the pickup was already out of his vehicle and complained of non-life threatening traumatic injuries. A second Fire-Rescue ambulance was requested and responded to the scene. Firefighter-Paramedics entered the damaged car and began treating the driver. Other crewmembers used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the driver’s side doors and the “B” post on the Toyota to access the patient. One leg was pinned between the door, floor, dash and seat. Crews were able to free her after removing the driver’s door. The patient suffered multiple traumatic injuries as well as a head injury. She was extricated with spinal precautions and transported by Fire-Rescue Medic 19 to the Trauma Center at Trident Hospital in North Charleston. Due to poor weather conditions, medical helicopters were grounded. Medic 9, transported the driver of the pickup truck to Colleton Medical Center. Traffic on Jefferies Hwy was blocked for about 40 minutes. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Engine 19, Medic 9, Medic 19, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 111 and Car 112 responded.  Firefighter-EMT Andy O’Quinn served as Incident Commander.
