19/February/2019 – MVC with Entrapment – “B” Shift

Incident # 19-01129 – A 42 year old male was critically injured in a single car MVC in the 400 block of Dorsey Street Tuesday evening 19-February. At 19:45, the east bound truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when it veered off of the roadway and struck two trees. The Ford pickup truck received extensive damage, with several feet of intrusion into the passenger space. The driver received multiple traumatic injuries and was trapped in the wreckage. Firefighter-Paramedics began treating the man inside the truck while additional crews used Holmatro hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the driver. He was removed from the vehicle with full spinal precautions and moved to Fire-Rescue Medic 26. The C.A.R.E. Flight medical helicopter was requested, but could not fly due to poor weather conditions. The man was transported emergent directly to the Trauma Center at Trident Hospital in North Charleston. Two additional Firefighter-Paramedics assisted with his care during the transport. The man’s condition deteriorated enroute to the hospital and required advanced airway care to maintain his breathing. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 105, Car 107, Car 112 and Walterboro Fire units responded. Deputy Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.
