02/June/2019 – MVC with entrapment – “B” Shift

Incident # 19-03806 – A high speed MVC resulted in a single car MVC at the intersection of Quail Drive and Mount Carmel Road Sunday morning 02-June at 0036. The small silver Impala was attempting to elude Walterboro Police Officers as it traveled north on Mount Carmel Road at a high rate of speed. The Impala made a turn on to Quail Drive about ½ mile outside the City Limit, lost control and overturned in a ditch, trapping both occupants. Walterboro Police and Sheriff Deputies were on the scene immediately following the crash. Police Officers were able to free the female occupant and assist her from the car. She suffered non-life threatening multiple traumatic injuries. Rescue 1 was tied up with another entrapment MVC in Green Pond when the incident occurred. Rescue 18 responded from Bells Crossroads to handle the incident. A medical helicopter was also requested, but none were available due to a multi-helicopter response in Allendale County. The male driver was trapped in the vehicle and complained several injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the injured man in the car, until other crews, using Holmatro Rescue Tools were able to free him. Crews used a hydraulic cutter and spreader to fold down the roof and free the driver. He was extricated with full spinal precautions. Both patients were transported emergent with additional Firefighter-Paramedics on board to assist with their care. Fire-Rescue Medic 26 transported to the Trauma Center at Trident Hospital in North Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Quail Drive was blocked for approximately 1-1/2 hours because of the accident.

Engine 26, Medic 26, Rescue 18 and Car 112 responded. Firefighter-EMT Brad Welch served as Incident Commander.
