03/December/2019 – ATV Accident with Air Evac – “A” Shif

Incident # 19-08397 – Two adults were sent to a Trauma Center following an ATV accident in a wooded area off of Jefferies Hwy. (US Hwy 15) near Zeke Road Tuesday evening 03-December at 22:14. An off-duty Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief who lives in the area responded to assist and found the people off of the roadway in the woods. He initially had trouble locating the two along the dark highway, but the woman used the flashlight on her cell phone to signal him. The four wheeled ATV had flipped over ejecting both patients. The adult male was critically injured with multiple traumatic injuries and a near amputation of one of his legs. The other patient had placed a make shift tourniquet on the leg which helped to slow the bleeding. Firefighter-Paramedics placed two additional tourniquets on the leg to stop the bleeding and requested a medical helicopter and a second Fire-Rescue Ambulance to respond to the scene.  The adult female also suffered multiple traumatic injuries. The male patient was treated at the scene, then transported by Fire-Rescue Medic 19 to a nearby field to meet with the medical helicopter. C.A.R.E. Flight landed in the field and the patient was quickly transferred to the helicopter, then flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Hospital in North Charleston. Fire-Rescue Medic 26 treated the female patient and transported her emergent to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center.

Engine 19, Medic 19, Medic 26, Battalion 1 and Car 27 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
