07/December/2019 – Hay Trailer Fire – “B” Shift Incident # 19-08496 – Augusta Hwy (SC Hwy 61) was
blocked in the area of Rio Vista Lane Saturday afternoon 07-December at
14:42. An east bound truck pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with hay bales
caught fire while traveling on the highway. The vehicle pulled to the right
shoulder and disconnected the trailer to save the truck. The fire spread
from the area of the wheels to the bales. Engine 19 arrived to find several
of the bales burning and requested additional units, including Tenders and
personnel to assist in extinguishing the fire. Crews had to knock down the
fire, then manually off load the smoldering large rolled bales then break
them apart to extinguish the fire. Heavy smoke from the fire limited
visibility on the roadway, which was shut down due to the fire fighting
effort. Units were on the scene for two hours. Sheriff’s Deputies rerouted
traffic. The hay bales were lost and the trailer received moderate damage
from the fire. Engine 19, Engine 36, Tender 5, Tender 19, Tender 26,
Tender 27, Tender 36, Medic 19, Medic 26 and Car 107 responded. Assistant
Chief Marty Stallings served as Incident Commander. Photos by Harold Buzzell |
