27/December/2019 – Fatal Auto Pedestrian MVC – “A” Shift

Incident # 19-08992 – At approximately 08:52 Friday morning 27-December, a motorist stopped at a traffic stop where a Yemassee Police Officer had a car pulled over on southbound I-95 near Exit 38. The motorist told the officer that he thought he saw a body laying in the ditch near the 41 mile marker. The officer responded to the location and found an adult male with multiple traumatic injuries lying in the ditch. Fire-Rescue units were sent to the scene and found the North Carolina man had no signs of life. Evidence at the scene indicated the man was more than likely struck by a semi-truck while in the travel lane and was thrown to his present location. The truck did not stop. A vehicle registered to the deceased man was found on a nearby frontage road. The SC Highway Patrol and the Colleton County Coroner’s Office are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Busy holiday traffic was down to one lane while Troopers conducted their investigation. I-95 traffic backed up over 15 miles, with travelers clogging area highways and city streets as they attempted to find alternate routes. Anyone with information regarding the accident is urged to contact the SC Highway Patrol.

Engine 13, Medic 13, Battalion 1 and Car 112 responded. Firefighter-EMT Dakota Smith served as Incident Commander.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the South Carolina Highway Patrol at 843-953-6010 or 1-800-768-1580.
