06/May/2020 – Fatal MVC with entrapment – “C” Shift Incident # 20-03010 – A 40 yr. old Cottageville man and
his dog were killed in a single vehicle high speed MVC on Sniders Hwy. (SC
Hwy 63) just west of Rentz Dr Wednesday afternoon 06-May at 19:50. A
Fire-Rescue unit that was responding to another incident in the area road up
on the accident which a neighbor advised just occurred. The vehicle was
traveling toward Walterboro when it drove off of the right shoulder past
Tyler Rd, reentered the highway, over-corrected and left the roadway a
second time before sliding sideways and flipping over into several trees.
The cab on the 2007 Nissan Frontier pickup truck was crushed to the floor
trapping the driver. Firefighter-Paramedics used a chainsaw to remove
several smaller trees to reach the cab. They stabilized the vehicle and used
a wench to pull the truck off of the trees. They then used Holmatro Rescue
tools to remove the roof and extricate the driver and the dog.
Unfortunately, both were deceased. Coroner Richard Harvey responded to the
scene and the Coroner’s Office transported the patient to the morgue.
Firefighter’s buried the canine at the scene. Traffic on Sniders Highway in
the area of the accident was detoured for three hours. The CARE Flight
helicopter was placed on standby, but was not used. The SC Highway Patrol is
investigating the crash. Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 27, Battalion 1, Car
112 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Chris Jones served as Incident
Commander. |
