13/June/2010 – High Speed MVC – “B” Shift

Incident # 20-03891 – Six people were injured, two severely in a two vehicle high speed MVC on Interstate 95 at Exit 42 northbound Saturday morning 13-June at 08:13. The vehicles collided just north of the exit causing both cars to enter the woods. The Subaru struck several trees and overturned on it’s side. The Honda drove deeper into the woods and also struck several trees. Both cars received heavy damage. An off-duty Firefighter-EMT from Station 13 had just finished his shift and drove up on the accident immediately after it occurred. He called the incident in to Dispatch and began treating the injured. Station 13 units arrived minutes later. Two additional ambulances and a Rescue unit were requested and responded. A family of four were inside the Subaru and could not get out of the vehicle. Crews used a chain saw to work their way into the heavy brush and were able to assist the family from the car without using hydraulic rescue tools. None of the family members suffered life threatening injuries. The two occupants of the Honda received more serious injuries. Both were removed from the vehicle and placed in Fire-Rescue Medic 1. Their injuries were treated and Medic 1 transported emergent to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center. Enroute to the ED, one of the patient’s condition deteriorated and Medic 9 meet Medic 1 in Cottageville and took over the care of one of the patients. Both units continued to Trident ED. The four patients from the Subaru were all wearing seatbelts and denied the need for further medical treatment and did not request transport to a hospital. Units were on the scene for 1-1/2 hours. The SC Hwy Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Engine 13, Medic 1, Medic 13, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 112 and car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
