28/September/2020 – Fatal MVC with entrapment – “C” Shift

Incident # 20-6620 – An adult female was killed and an adult male was injured following a two car head-on collision on ACE Basin Parkway (US Hwy 17) just south of Wood Road in the Green Pond Community Monday morning 28-September at 04:41. The vehicles collided in the southbound lanes spreading debris across the five lanes and blocking the roadway. Engine 6 and Medic 6 stationed one block away arrived within minutes to find a Nissan Xterra over-turned in the middle of ACE Basin Parkway. The female driver was unconscious and trapped in the wreckage, suffering from multiple traumatic injuries. A BMW was south of the Xterra against the guard rail. The male driver suffered multiple, non-life threatening traumatic injuries and a head injury. The force of the collision broke the engine completely out of the Xterra. Crews began treating both patients and requested one additional Fire-Rescue Ambulance and a medical helicopter. They stabilized the Xterra and began extricating the driver using Holmatro Rescue Tools. Firefighter-Paramedics from Medic 1 treated the driver of the BMW and rapidly transported him to the Trauma Center at MUSC. No medical helicopters could fly due to poor weather conditions. Once the extrication was complete the driver of the Xterra was placed in Medic 6 with additional personnel on board to assist with her care. Medic 6 began transporting emergent to the Trauma Center at MUSC, however the patient went into cardiac arrest and Medic 6 diverted to the closer Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. The patient responded to treatment and pulses returned enroute, however the patient did not survive her injuries and passed away later at Colleton ED. ACE Basin Parkway in the area of the accident was closed for two hours until the collision could be cleared. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 6, Medic 1, Medic 6, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 112 and Car 118 responded. Captain Richie Wood served as Incident Commander.
