27/November/2020 - MVC with Fire - "A" Shift

Incident # 20-08153 - An incident that occurred near the 39 mile marker on I-95 in the Town of Yemassee (Hampton County) resulted in injuries to a municipal police officer at approximately 15:15 Friday 27-November. The Blue Toyota Tundra pickup truck fled the scene traveling northbound on I-95 and entered Colleton County a short time later. Yemassee Police and the SC Highway Patrol pursued the subject for approx. 7 miles. The driver of the pickup set the interior of the truck on fire while being chased by Law Enforcement. He veered off of the highway and crashed the truck in the wooded median at the 46-1/2 mile marker NB (about 1/2 mile south of the rest area). Law Enforcement units were on the scene immediately, but the subject resisted arrest. Colleton Fire-Rescue units were notified by Law Enforcement of the vehicle fire and the injured driver. Firefighter-Paramedics arrived a short time later to find the small pickup truck deep in the median with the passenger compartment of the truck well involved. One crew began treating the 57 year old adult male for minor injuries. Another crew deployed one handline to extinguish the fire.The fire was quickly extinguished, but the truck received extensive damage. Northbound I-95 in the area of the accident was blocked for about 30 minutes and holiday traffic quickly backed up for six miles. The man was transported to Colleton Medical Center for treatment and was accompanied by a police officer. The incident is being investigated by the Yemassee Police Department. 

Engine 1, Engine 13, Medic 13, Battalion 1, Car 112 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Scott O'Quinn served as Incident Commander.
