14/December/2020 - Train Fire - "C" Shift

Incident # 20-08599 - Fire-Rescue units were sent to Weiss Ln and Blachem Ln for a CSX Engine that was on fire Monday morning 14-December at 09:22. There was a good bit of confusion from the callers to 9-1-1 as to what was actually on fire and the location of the train. The Engineer was wise enough to stop the train so the burning Engine was placed at the end of Balchem Ln, which was easily accessible to Fire Apparatus. The tracks however are located next to the Balchem Chemical Plant. Engine 6 located the CSX Engine and directed other responding units to the correct location. Balchem evacuated their plant. Firefighter-Paramedics found heavy smoke coming from the second Engine of the train. No train cars were endangered. Crews deployed one 1-3/4 handline and directed water to the vents around the top of the Engine. The fire was extinguished within 10 to 15 minutes. Units were on the scene for nearly an hour some of which was cooling the metal exterior. The fire appeared to have started in a cooling fan near the top of the Engine. Damage to the Engine appeared to have been minor, but a CSX mechanic responded to the scene. No one was injured during the incident and there was no damage to the Balchem Plant or products.

Engine 6, Engine 2, Engine 1, Tender 1, Tender 2, Tender 6, Tender 27, Medic 6, Medic 1, HazMat 19, ARFF 19, Battalion 1, Car 101, Car 105, Car 112 and, Car 114 responded. Deputy Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.
