The annual "Shop with Santa's Heroes", sponsored by the Walterboro Police Department, was very different this year. Due to the Covid Pandemic, there was no large group and the participating agencies met over two days at Wat-Mart to perform the shopping. WPD Lt. Lindsey Ament coordinated the efforts.Local citizens and businesses donated the funds to make it a reality.
Each agency was assigned a family, who was selected by DSS. They were provided with the ages of the children in advance and each agency's personnel did the shopping for the children. After checkout, the gifts were loaded in department vehicles, then delivered to the children at their homes. It wasn't as much fun for the Responders as chasing an energetic, happy kid around Wal-mart who is pulling toys off the shelves, but the children still received a good Christmas, which is the whole point of the event. Local Law Enforcement Officers, Walterboro Fire Dept. and County Fire-Rescue participated.
