10-February-2021 - Fatal MVC with Ejection - "C" Shift

Incident # 21-01034 - A New York man was killed in a single vehicle high speed MVC on I-95 near the 51 mile marker southbound Wednesday morning 10-February at 00:38. Fire-Rescue units arrived to find the Chevrolet van overturned in the median. The vehicle had been traveling southbound, left the roadway and flipped over multiple times leaving a large debris field. The unrestrained driver was ejected from the van. Firefighter-Paramedics and Sheriff's Deputies searched the dark area and found the driver approx. 50 feet south of the accident site under the side door of the van near the wood line. He was unconscious, in critical condition, suffering from multiple traumatic injuries. A medical helicopter was requested while crews treated the man's injuries. CARE Flight landed on the Interstate about 10 minutes later, but the victim went into cardiac arrest. He was then rapidly transported to Colleton Medical Center by Fire-Rescue Medic 1. He did not survive his injuries. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. One lane of I-95 was closed for five hours while recovery crews cleaned up the large amount of debris and tools from the van.  

Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Battalion 1 and Car 112 responded. Battalion Chief Chris Jones served as Incident COmmander.
