03/June/2021 - Fatal MVC with Entrapment - "C" Shift

Incident # 21-03879 - Three people were injured, one fatally, in a single vehicle MVC at the intersection of Augusta Hwy. (SC Hwy 61) and Round O Road east of Canadys Thursday evening 03-June at 22:04. A Chrysler minivan traveling north on Round O Road, ran through a stop sign, crossed Augusta Hwy and collided with an oak tree. The minivan received heavy damage to the passenger side, trapping the front seat passenger. Fire-Rescue units arrived to find an adult female and male walking near the vehicle. The unrestrained passenger was not breathing and had no signs of life. A second Fire-Rescue Ambulance and the Coroner's Office was requested. Firefighter-Paramedics treated both of the walking patients at the scene. The female suffered multiple injuries and a suspected head injury. She was transported emergent to the Trauma Center at Trident Hospital with additional Firefighter-Paramedics on board to assist with her care. The driver refused ambulance transport and was arrested by the Highway Patrol. He was taken to the Colleton County Jail. After the Coroner's Office finished their investigation, Firefighters used Holmatro Pentheon Rescue Tools to extricate the passenger. The passenger door was removed using Spreaders and Cutters. Two Rams were used to displace the dash and "A" post to free the passenger. He was transported by the Coroner's Office. The intersection of Augusta Hwy and Round O Road was closed for two hours while the SC Hwy. Patrol conducted their investigation. 

Engine 19, Medic 9, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 102, Car 112 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
