19/June/2021 - High Speed MVC - "C" Shift

Incident # 21-04238 - Two northbound tractor trailers collided on I-95 near the 46 mile marker just south of the Rest Area Saturday morning 19-June at 02:51. One truck entered the median at a high rate of speed and struck several trees causing the truck to spin and roll over in the median. The trailer came apart, spilling the load of watermelons onto the highway and into the median. The second truck was able to stop in the breakdown lane. The driver of the overturned truck received substantial injuries to his legs. He was treated at the scene by Fire-Rescue, then transported to Colleton Medical Center. He was later flown by the CARE Flight helicopter to a Trauma Center in Charleston. The driver of the second truck was not injured. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Recovery crews spent most of Saturday cleaning up the accident and debris. Northbound traffic on I-95 was at a standstill most of Saturday. Traffic diverted to the side roads, causing heavy traffic on Hendersonville Hwy (US Hwy 17-A) and Lowcountry Hwy (US Hwy 21) through the afternoon. Several accidents caused by the increased traffic on those highways also caused further delays.

Engine 1, Medic 13 and Battalion 1 responded. Firefighter-EMT Kevin Morales served as Incident Commander.
