Last week Colleton County lost a dedicated leader with the death of Judge Richard B. Wood, Sr. of Green Pond. Judge Wood served Colleton residents in many roles for five decades, including his service as a Captain at Station # 6 (Green Pond). He, his brother and several others were instrumental in bringing fire protection to the Green Pond Community in the mid-1970s. Their local business served as Dispatcher and the business’ radio system provided communications for the Green Pond Fire Dept. This was done over a 20-year period before the County was involved in fire protection or 9-1-1 was available to Colleton residents. Due to Covid, a private family funeral service was held, but a large procession, consisting of construction equipment, wreckers, law enforcement vehicles and fire apparatus traveled from Parker Rhoden Funeral Home in Walterboro to the burial site near Clover Hill. His contributions will have a lasting effect and his caring nature, friendship, guidance and leadership will be greatly missed. Please remember his family in your prayers.
