24/April/2022 - Fatal MVC with entrapment and Air Evac - "A" Shift
Incident # 22-03087 - A 13 yr old male
perished and his 11 yr old sister was flown
to a Trauma Center following a single
vehicle accident on Ruffin Road at Big Hill
Road Sunday afternoon 24-April at 13:04. The
eastbound Chevrolet pickup truck dropped off
of the right hand shoulder, over corrected
and flipped over several times. The two
unrestrained children were ejected from the
truck and the truck rolled over on top of
them. Several motorists stopped to assist
and they were able to lift the truck up
enough to pull the girl from under the roof.
She suffered multiple traumatic injuries.
They were not able to reach the boy.
Firefighter-Paramedics arrived minutes
later, but the boy had no signs of life and
was trapped under the truck. One additional
Fire-Rescue Ambulance and a medical
helicopter were requested. CARE Flight
responded and landed on Ruffin Road. The
girl was transferred to the Flight Crew,
then flown to the Shawn Jenkins Children's
Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston.
Firefighters used Holmatro Low Pressure
lifting air bags to lift the truck and
extricate the victim. The Coroner's Office
transported him to Colleton Medical Center.
Ruffin Road in the area of the accident was
closed for 2-1/2 hours while Law
Enforcement investigated the accident.
Engine 26. Medic 18, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Rescue 18, Battalion 1, Car 107 and Car 112 responded. Firefighter-EMT James Varnadoe served as Incident Commander. |
