06/August/2022 - MVC w entrapment & Air Evac - "C" Shift

Incident # 22-06168 - Two people were critically injured in a single vehicle MVC in the 14500 block of Bells Hwy (SC Hwy 64) west of Stephens Crossroads Saturday morning 06-August at 08:06. A west bound Toyota RAV4 left the roadway, entered the east bound ditch and struck a driveway culvert. The small car became airborne, struck a second driveway culvert and flipped over at least three times. The unrestrained driver and passenger were both ejected from the vehicle. The adult male patient was found in the ditch approximately 30 feet from the car. He suffered multiple traumatic injuries. The unrestrained female was ejected and the car landed upright on top of her. She was trapped under the car, also suffering from multiple traumatic injuries and burns from the hot engine and exhaust system. A two month old was found in stable condition still strapped in his safety seat in the back seat. Two additional Fire-Rescue ambulances were assigned to the incident. Firefighter-Paramedics treated all three patients and used Holmatro Low Pressure Air Bags to lift the car off of the woman. She and the adult male were both transported by Fire-Rescue ambulances to the Bells Elementary School where two medical helicopters responded. Car 114 set up the landing zone in front of the school. The CARE Flight and Meducare helicopters flew the adult patients to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The baby was transported emergent in Fire-Rescue Medic 13 to the Children's Trauma Center at MUSC. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The Sheriff's Office assisted with traffic control. Bells Hwy in the area of the accident was closed for approximately an hour.
