08/August/2022 - Multi-vehicle MVC - "A" Shift

Incident # 22-06211 - A six vehicle MVC on I-95 near the 59 mile marker southbound sent five people to area hospitals and closed southbound traffic for two hours Monday morning 08-August at 06:11. The accident occurred just before sunrise in light fog. Witnesses reported a southbound car left the roadway, hit the cable barrier and returned to the roadway. The vehicle was reported to be disabled and stopped in the lane of traffic. This caused a chain reaction type accident. One vehicle was struck in the rear by a tractor trailer causing extensive damage to the car. A cargo rail in the back of the BMW was pushed forward and impaled a 10 year old girl sitting in the back seat. Bystanders controlled the bleeding prior to the arrival of Fire-Rescue units. A Dodge pickup towing a concrete trailer overturned on the left shoulder and several other vehicles along with debris were scattered about the southbound lanes. Two tractor trailers were in the breakdown lane, which blocked all southbound lanes. Most emergency vehicles traveled one mile north in the southbound lanes from Bells Hwy (SC Hwy 64) to reach the scene. A medical helicopter was requested for the 10 year old, but could not fly due to the fog. Four Fire-Rescue ambulances were sent to the accident. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the injured and several other people with minor injuries and did not wish to go to the hospital. The 10 year old girl and two adults were transported to the Trauma Center at MUSC. The other two patients were transported to Colleton Medical Center. Southbound traffic backed up several miles. The bystanders and people involved in the accident were remarkable in assisting each other and caring for the injured. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the MVC.
Engine 1, Engine 26, Medic 1, Medic 13, Medic 19, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 105 and Car 112 responded. Battalion Chief Scott O'Quinn served as Incident Commander.
