08/March/2023 - Motorcycle vs Pickup truck MVC - "A" Shift

Incident # 23-01754 - An adult male was critically injured when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a pickup truck in the 11000 block of Augusta Hwy. (SC Hwy 61) near Oakman Branch Road, Wednesday afternoon 08-March at 14:27. Witnesses advised the northbound motorcycle was passing another vehicle when it struck the pickup truck nearly head-on. The truck driver drove off of the road to avoid the collision, but the motorcycle sideswiped the truck. The bike then lost control and slid across both lanes of the highway. The motorcyclist suffered multiple traumatic injuries and a near amputation of one leg. An off-duty Doctor was walking her dog and witnessed the collision. She ran to the man's aid and began treating his many injuries. The Doctor applied a tourniquet to his leg to control the bleeding, which contributed to saving his life.  She remained with him until Firefighter-Paramedics arrived and continued to assist until he was transported from the scene. A second Fire-Rescue ambulance was assigned to the incident to treat the driver of the pickup truck. He suffered non-life threatening injuries and did not require ambulance transportation to the hospital. Crews stabilized the motorcycle driver at the scene, then transported him emergent in Fire-Rescue Medic 26 to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston.
Additional Firefighter-Paramedics assisted with his care enroute to Trident. No medical helicopters were immediately available. Augusta Hwy in the area of the accident was closed for about 1-1/2 hours while the SC Highway Patrol investigated the collision.

Engine 5, Medic 7, Medic 26, Car 103, Car 110 and Car 111 responded. Captain Ethan Sheider served as Incident Commander.
