30/March/2023 - MVC with HazMat - "B" Shift

Incident # 23-02304 - At 16:17 Thursday afternoon 30-March, a south bound tractor trailer truck on I95 at the 68 mile marker suffered a front tire blow out. The driver lost control and entered the wooded median. The truck drove through the median, striking a large tree and several smaller trees causing damage to the chassis and box trailer. The truck continued south, entered the northbound lanes and came to rest on the northbound shoulder with the trailer blocking one northbound lane. The truck narrowly missed two northbound Spartenburg Sheriff's vehicles, but luckily did not collide with any northbound vehicles. Debris, oil and diesel fuel covered the northbound lanes. The box trailer broke several feet behind the cab. The load was pallets of bottle juice drinks. The driver's side saddle tanks ruptured and spilled diesel fuel on the grass, which reached the water filled ditch. Engine 5 requested a HazMat response. SCDOT also responded with a dump truck of sand. Responders were able to remove debris and reopen one northbound lane, however northbound traffic backed up for over 10 miles. Nearby Jefferies Hwy (US Hwy 15) also backed up with overflow traffic and was at a standstill from Augusta Hwy to Pleasant Grove Rd. The truck driver received minor injuries and denied ambulance transport to the hospital. Firefighter-Paramedics worked to control the leaking diesel fuel and placed absorbent pads in the water filled ditch. Wrecker crews used two large wreckers to pull the truck from the roadway. While moving the truck a fire ignited in the engine compartment. Firefighters deployed one handline from Engine 5 to control the fire. Units were on the scene for close to four hours.
SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 5, Tender 5, HazMat 19, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 105 and Car 112, SCDOT and SCDHEC responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
