09/April/2023 - HazMat Response - "C" Shift Incident # 23-02571 - At 17:42, two tractor trailers collided at the 42 mile marker southbound on I-95 just north of a previous fatal MVC. One truck was hauling hazardous chemicals, some of which were carried in containers on pallets. The impact caused the load to shift, damaging approximately 7 of the containers, several of which began to leak. The product spilled onto the highway. State Troopers were still on the scene of the previous accident and blocked the Interstate, rerouting traffic up the exit ramp to Lowcountry Highway (US Hwy. 21) . Fire-Rescue units responded with a Hazardous Material Team and set up in the southbound lanes. Fire-Rescue HazMat Technicians donned Level "A" protective suits to examine the leak. Several Firefighter-Paramedics worked to contain the leak. A private contractor also responded to clean up the spill and haul off the damaged containers. Traffic on southbound I-95 was again stopped and rerouted for several hours causing holiday traffic to back up over six miles. SC Hwy Patrol diverted traffic from the Interstate and Colleton Sheriff's Deputies kept the traffic moving across Lowcountry Highway to keep it moving as fast as possible. Fire-Rescue units and law enforcement were on the scene for over eight hours. Engine 1, HazMat 19, HazMat Tender 19, Medic 1, Medic 13, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 105, Car 110, Car 111, Car 116 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Chris Jones served as Incident Commander. SC Hwy Patrol, Colleton County Sheriff's Office, State Transport Police and DHEC also responded. |
