19/June/2023 - Fatal MVC with Entrapment and Ejection - "B" Shift

Incident # 23-04440 - A Ridgeville man was killed and a Walterboro woman was critically injured in a two car MVC at the intersection of Round O Road and Augusta Hwy. (SC Hwy 61) Monday evening 19-June at 21:42. A Ford Crown Victoria from Round O Road collided with a Chevrolet Suburban on Augusta Hwy. causing heavy damage to both vehicles. The cars then entered the ditch and struck several trees. None of the occupants in either vehicle were wearing seatbelts. The driver of the Ford was deceased and trapped in the wreckage. The front seat passenger in the Suburban was ejected from the SUV and found critically injured on the shoulder of the road. The driver of the SUV suffered multiple traumatic injuries as well. A canine in the SUV was also injured. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the injured persons at the scene, then transported the two female occupants of the Suburban to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. No medical helicopters could fly due to poor weather conditions. Two deputies attended to the canine until Animal Services arrived and transported the dog. Firefighter-Paramedics used Holmatro Pentheon rescue tools to extricate the driver of the Ford, A hydraulic Spreader and Cutter were used to remove the driver's side door and a Ram was used to displace the dash off of the man so allow him to be removed from the vehicle. The Coroner's Office responded to the scene and transported the driver of the Ford. Augusta Hwy at Round O Road was closed for three hours until SCHP completed their investigation and the accident was cleared. 

Engine 5, Engine 19, Medic 19, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 103, Car 111, Car 112 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
