02/January/2024 - Plane Crash - "A" Shift

Incident # 24-00034 - An adult female was critically injured after her single engine plane crashed into a pond on private property in the 5000 block of Wiggins Road Tuesday morning 02-January at 11:34. The site was well off of the roadway and not visible from Wiggins Road. The Piper aircraft had just taken off from Beaufort when it apparently suffered mechanical problems. The plane had turned back towards Beaufort. The property owner on Wiggins Road was in his yard when he heard the plane strike several trees and watched as it nose dived into a small pond in his yard. He advised the engine was not running when the plane struck the tree. He ran to aid the injured woman, who was the sole occupant of the plane. She was unconscious and suffered multiple injuries. The plane was on the edge of the pond and one wing was ripped off of the fuselage, spilling a large amount of fuel into the water and around the scene. The location is in a remote rural area approximately five miles south of ACE Basin Parkway (US Hwy 17) and 12 miles south of the Green Pond Community. Firefighter-Paramedics arrived about 15 minutes later, as well as the CARE Flight medical helicopter which had been automatically dispatched. Crews found the woman in critical condition. With the assistance of the bystanders, she was removed from the aircraft and transported a short distance to meet with the Flightcrew. Advanced medical procedures were conducted including the administration of whole blood and airway management. She was flown from the scene by CARE Flight to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. DHEC and the FAA responded to the scene. Fire-Rescue units were on the scene for four hours.
Engine 6, Medic 6, Rescue 1, Dive 1, Battalion 1, Car 107, Car 111, Car 112, Car 114 responded. Battalion Chief Scott O'Quinn served as Incident Commander.
