06/February/2024 - Fatal MVC with Entrapment

Incident # 24-00984 - A Summerville woman perished and two other people were injured, in a two vehicle head-on collision in the 14300 block of Cottageville Hwy. (US Hwy 17-A) east of the Town of Cottageville Tuesday evening 06-February. At 21:11, 9-1-1 received several reports of the accident. Fire-Rescue Units arrived to find the highway blocked. A Lincoln with heavy damage was blocking the southbound lane. A Safelite delivery cargo van was overturned on the northbound shoulder. Debris littered the highway. The adult female driver of Lincoln was deceased and trapped in the wreckage. An adult female passenger in the Lincoln was able to escape from the car with non-life threatening injuries. The adult male driver of the van was also able to exit his vehicle and suffered non-life threatening injuries. All occupants were wearing seatbelts. A second Fire-Rescue ambulance was requested, while crews treated both injured parties at the scene. Cottageville Hwy was closed in the area of the accident for 3-1/2 hours. Sheriff Deputies rerouted traffic while the SC Highway Patrol investigated the MVC. Once the investigation was complete, Firefighters used Holmatro Pentheon rescue tools to remove both driver's side doors and the "B" post to extricate the driver. She was transported by the Coroner's Office. Fire-Rescue Medic 9 transported the passenger from the Lincoln to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center. Medic 19 transported the driver of the van to Colleton Medical Center. 

Engine 9, Medic 9, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 111 and Car 112 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic Donald Martin served as Incident Commander.
