01/June/2024 - Shooting Incident - "B" Shift

Incident # 24-04252 - An 8 yr. old male received a critical gunshot wound in a reported driveby shooting incident Saturday evening 01-June. At 23:01, 9-1-1 received a report that a child had been shot in the 100 block of London Lane north of Walterboro. While enroute to the scene, a Deputy encountered a southbound car traveling a high rate of speed toward Walterboro. Battalion 1 was also responding in the same direction on Jefferies Hwy (US Hwy 15) and the car flagged him down in the 2500 block near Southland Apartments. The occupants handed the child off to Battalion 1, who operates a Paramedic level First Response unit. The child was in cardiac arrest. The Sergeant with the Sheriff's Office turned around and arrived moments later. He and the Battalion Chief immediately began providing CPR and advanced life support measures. Medic 19 and Engine 19 who were enroute the original location were diverted to Jefferies Hwy.  Additional personnel arrived minutes later as Responders continued to work on the boy in the middle of the highway. Crews were able to successfully resuscitate the child and he regained a heart beat and began breathing on his own. A medical helicopter was requested from Charleston. CARE Flight was on another assignment out of the county. When Medic 19 arrived, the patient was transported to Colleton Medical Center with several additional Firefighter-Paramedics onboard to assist with his care.
The staff at the Colleton Medical Center ED performed a tremendous job stabilizing the child until the Meducare helicopter arrived. Colleton's ED Physicians conferred with the Doctors at Shawn Jenkins Children's Trauma Center at MUSC and the patient was flown there in critical condition. The Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. Anyone with information regarding the crime is urged to contact the Sheriff's Office at (843) 549-2211.

Engine 19, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 111 responded. Engineer-Paramedic Tony Keen served as Incident Commander.
