04/June/2024 - Structure Fire - "A" Shift

Incident # 24-04300 - A single family dwelling was heavily damaged in a morning fire in the 100 block of Sheldon Court. Tuesday 04-June. The first 9-1-1 call was received at 01:29 reporting fire in a room and the roof. Fire-Rescue units arrived to find heavy fire conditions on the north end of the structure with a portion of the roof already collapsed. The sole occupant was awakened by smoke alarms provided and installed by County Firefighters a few years ago. He and two canines were able to escape the burning home unharmed. The Colleton County Council funds free smoke alarms for citizens and County Firefighters install them for free. Crews deployed two handlines to the building and made entry through the front door. They had the bulk of the fire knocked down within 15 minutes, but were on the scene for 3-1/3 hours performing overhaul. Water supply was conducted using Tenders. Most of the structural damage was contained to the north end of the building. The remainder of the home suffered heat, smoke and water damage, with most personal items damaged. The Red Cross is assisting the man. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but appears to have started in the back corner bedroom.

Anyone wishing to have free smoke alarms installed in their homes can call Fire-Rescue Headquarters at (843) 539-1960.

Engine 1, Engine 27, Tender 1, Tender 6, Tender 19, Tender 26, Tender 27, Medic 1, Medic 6, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 101 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Scott O'Quinn served as Incident Commander.
