Incident # 24-06638 - At 20:20, Monday evening 27-August, a 24 yr. old Cottageville man perished in a single vehicle MVC on Jefferies Hwy (US Hwy 15) near Longleaf Drive. A Toyota Corolla was traveling south on Jefferies Hwy at a high rate of speed, when it dropped off of the southbound shoulder at Longleaf Dr. The driver overcorrected, lost control and crossed over four lanes before entering the northbound ditch. The car began to slide sideways, then struck a culvert pipe and began to flip over as it collided with a power pole roof first. The impact broke the pole and the car rolled and struck several trees receiving heavy damage. The unrestrained driver suffered multiple traumatic injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics found the man unconscious inside the car with no signs of life. The Coroner's Office was notified and responded to the scene. All traffic in the area of the accident was detoured for two hours while the SC Highway Patrol conducted their investigation. Sheriff's Deputies and Walterboro Police assisted with traffic control.
Engine 19, Medic 1, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 111 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Scott O'Quinn served as Incident Commander.
