Incident # 24-07767 - One person died and two others were critically injured in a MVC that occurred at Whetstones Crossroads in Bamberg County, Tuesday afternoon 01-October at 13:21. The location is about a half mile from the Colleton County line, where US Hwy 21 and SC Hwy 61 intersect. A northbound loaded log truck on US Hwy 21 collided with a passenger car who was traveling on SC Hwy 61. The log truck overturned, spilling its load of logs and then slid into the convenience store. The store was undergoing renovations. A worker at the location was operating a skid steer, which was struck by the log truck, ejecting the operator. The man sadly died at the scene. Thorne Ambulance Service treated the truck driver and requested a medical helicopter. Bamberg County units also requested mutual aid from Colleton County. US Hwy 21 was blocked by the wreckage and logs in the highway. Several Colleton Fire-Rescue units responded to assist. Medic 7 treated the female driver of the passenger car and transported her emergent to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. The Meducare helicopter from Orangeburg responded and landed in a nearby field. They flew the truck driver to a Trauma Center in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
Engine 7, Medic 7, Battalion 1, Car 103, Car 111, Car 118 and Car 119 responded. Bamberg County Fire Dept served as Incident Command.
