12 & 13 October - Agriculture/Farm Rescue Class

Fire-Rescue hosted an agriculture/farm rescue class at Salkehatchie Forks Farms in Islandton Saturday & Sunday 12 & 13 October. The comprehensive course taught responders about farm equipment, farm animals, farm implement operations and rescue techniques related to farming equipment. Crews learned about grain bin extrication and the many challenges associated with farming equipment. The owners of the farm provided space for the classroom sessions, as well as the use of their equipment. They also prepared lunch for the students on both days. The hands-on class allowed Firefighters the opportunity to conduct different rescue techniques on the various types of farm equipment using a variety of tools. The staff at the farm provided great insight as to the operations, construction and modifications to many types of farming equipment. They also set up the scenarios for the students during each evolution. A dozen Colleton Firefighters and a Jasper County Firefighter attended the course. Colleton County Battalion Chief Scott Feather and DPH EMS Director Mitch Stewart served as instructors.
