17/November/2024 - Drowning Incident - "B" Shift

Incident # 24-09162 - Fire-Rescue responded to a residence in the 200 block of Whetsel Street for a report of an unconscious child found in a swimming pool at 07:28, Sunday morning 17-November. Sadly it turned out to be an 8 yr old, autistic boy who had been reported missing about 10 minutes earlier from a residence on Springwood Dr a few blocks away. The man who discovered the boy pulled him from the water, had his wife call 9-1-1 and immediately began performing CPR. Walterboro Police Officers and Sheriff's Deputies were already in the area looking for the missing child and arrived very quickly. The officers continued CPR until Firefighter-Paramedics arrived. The child was in cardiac arrest and responders initiated advanced resuscitative efforts at the scene, including airway management, suction, CPR and medications. He was transported by Fire-Rescue Medic 1 with two additional Firefighter-Paramedics and a Walterboro Police Officer on board to assist with his care. He was transported emergent to Colleton Medical Center, where the ED staff did a great job on additional resuscitative efforts. The ED diligently continued care for about 45 minutes, but he did not respond to the care and sadly passed away. It is not known how long he was in the water before he was found. The Walterboro Police Dept is investigating the incident.

Medic 1, Battalion 1, Car 101, WFD, WPD and the Sheriff's Office responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
