16/December/2024 - MVC with Entrapment & Air Evac - "A" Shift

Incident # 24-09907 - An adult male was critically injured in a single car MVC in the 300 block of Ivanhoe Road Monday afternoon 16-December. At 13:08, two men observed the small SUV slowly drive over the embankment into Ireland Creek. The car overturned in the shallow water, trapping the driver. He was pinned in the car in such a way that his head was under the water. Caden Moyer and Asher Caponetti, who watched the events unfold from the Ollie's parking lot, jumped into action. They entered the water and made efforts to rescue the man. A Walterboro Police Officer also drove up on the accident and he too entered the cold water and was able to hold the unconscious man's head up out of the water. Two other Walterboro Police Officers arrived quickly and also entered the water and the vehicle. The five men were eventually able to free the man as the ambulance crew arrived. He was quickly placed into Fire-Rescue Medic 19 where resuscitative efforts were administered. He required advanced airway placement and was transported emergent to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center to meet with the CARE Flight helicopter crew. After additional care was administered, he was flown to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston. He remains in critical condition at Trident. The man's dog was also in the vehicle, but did not appear to be injured. Animal Services took custody of the dog. The Walterboro Police Dept is investigating the crash.
