21/January/2025 - Lowcountry Snow Event

The South Carolina Lowcountry experienced a rare snow event which began the evening of 21-January. The snow was part of a bigger weather event that stretched from Texas to New York, bringing heavy snow falls to the Gulf and Atlantic coasts and immobilizing many southern communities. Colleton County was prepared as much as it could for snow, with SCDOT pretreating major roads and I-95. Additional road crews were brought in to assist in clearing roadways and the County Public Works also assisted their State counterpart. Emergency responses were slowed due to the hazards on the roadways, but the snow that blanketed the area was beautiful. Unlike most snow events which are gone the following day, below freezing temperatures kept the snow on the ground for five days. Businesses, Government Offices and Schools were closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but were able to reopen the following Monday. Fire-Rescue opened the County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during the event, coordinating resource requests with State and Federal agencies.
