07/February/2026 - Structure Fire - "C" Shift Incident # 26-01028 - A garage/work shop, several vehicles, equipment and approx. 2 acres of woods were damaged in an afternoon fire in the 1700 block of Jefferies Hwy., Saturday afternoon 07-Feb. At 14:02, 9-1-1 received several reports of the building fire which was easily visible from Jefferies Highway. Medic 18 had just cleared from HCA Colleton Hospital and arrived about 1 minute later to find the single story metal building with heavy smoke visible and fire coming from the east side of the building. The woods fire was also burning through the yard and into the adjacent woods. When Engine 19 arrived, Firefighter-Paramedics deployed several handlines to the building and doused the yard fire near the home. Other crews used hand tools to combat the woods fire until a Forestry tractor arrived. Crews knocked down the fire outside of the structure and entered the building through a side door. They quickly extinguished the fire inside the structure. The building and contents received heavy damage. One car and several smaller vehicles were also damaged. No injuries were reported. The fire is believed to have started from a debris pile fire next to the building. Dry conditions and light winds contributed to the spread of the fire. Fire units were on the scene for two hours. Engine 19, Engine 26, Tender 1, Tender 19, Tender 26, Tender 27, Medic 18, Medic 26 and Battalion 1 responded. Captain Mike Duffy served as Incident Commander. Photos by Harold Buzzell |
