11/May/2026 - Gas Line Breakage - "B" Shift Incident # 26-03967 - At 11:06 on Monday 11-May, 9-1-1 was notified that a construction crew had accidentally dug up a Gas Line at 1306 Hampton St. The company was clearing overgrown brush in the vacant lot when they struck an above ground gas line. The line was broken and actively discharging a large amount natural gas in the area. Several Fire-Rescue apparatus arrived at the location a short time later and closed one block of Hampton Street and Colson Street. Traffic at the busy intersection was detoured for close to an hour. Homes, one business and a church were evacuated. An elementary school near the incident location was place on "Lock In" and several CCSO Officers and Firefighters were staged at the school with air monitoring equipment. HM-19 Deployed several AreaRae's to monitor conditions along Hampton Street. A Dominion Energy crew arrived quickly and worked for about 30 minutes to contain the leak. Once they advised the incident was safe, the road was reopened and occupants were allowed back into their homes. No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged. Engine 19, Tender 27, Rescue 1, Medic 19, HazMat 19, Car 103, C104, Car 105, Car 107, Car 112, Car 115, and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Matt Smart served as Incident Commander. The Colleton County Sheriff's Office, Walterboro City Police and SC Highway Patrol assisted with the traffic detour. |
