Incident # 26-08108 - An adult tragically died and two other adults were injured when two pickup trucks collided head-on in the 5500 block of Bells Hwy. (SC Hwy. 64) west of Doctors Creek Road Friday evening 25-Sept. at 19:56. 9-1-1 received several reports regarding the collision. Medic 26 arrived to find the vehicles a good distance apart. An east bound Chevrolet received heavy front end damage and was down an embankment in the west bound ditch. Crews discovered the driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, was entrapped and had no signs of life. Additional resources were requested including one additional Fire-Rescue Ambulance and a rescue truck. Crews then went to the second pickup which was still in the roadway, blocking the west bound lane. Two occupants received multiple non-life threatening injuries. Both were treated at the scene by Firefighter-Paramedics, then transported to HCA Colleton Hospital in Walterboro. Both lanes of Bells Hwy., in the area of the accident were blocked for two hours by the vehicles and debris. The Coroner's Office was requested and responded to the scene. Once they completed their investigation, Responders used Holmatro Pentheon Rescue Tools to removed both driver's side doors from the Chevrolet, remove a portion of the driver's seat and displace the dash to extricate the driver. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
Engine 18, Engine 26, Medic 1, Medic 18, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Brush 23, Battalion 1 and Car 105 responded. Battalion Chief Scott O'Quinn served as Incident Commander.
