Qualifications for Employment

Candidates will be responsible for performing a variety of duties including emergency response, vehicle and station maintenance, equipment testing, fire prevention activities and public education. Position requires a thorough knowledge of firefighting, fire pump operations and emergency medical knowledge. Applicants must be dependable, of good moral character, be in good physical condition, be able to work under highly stressful conditions and have the ability to work well with others.  

·        One year firefighting experience with a volunteer or career fire department

·        Certification as an IFSAC or ProBoard Firefighter II

·        SC or National Registry Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (B, I or Paramedic) is required.

·        Valid SC driver’s license with a good driving record (Class “E” or better within 1 month of employment)

·        Clear criminal history

·        High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

·        Applicants must provide a 10-year driving history with the application.

Colleton County offers very competitive pay rates, which include County benefits package and Police Officer's Retirement. All overtime pay is calculated after 40 hours worked each week. Colleton County does not deduct for mealtime and offers a paid monthly In-service training program. All applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment testing as outlined in the hiring procedures directive.

How to Become a Volunteer  

Volunteer Firefighters are always needed to respond to emergencies and operate area fire stations. The Volunteer Firefighter is the backbone of the Fire-Rescue Agency. Volunteers come from all walks of life, donating many hours to the community.

Persons wishing to volunteer can stop by Fire-Rescue Headquarters at 113 Mable T. Willis Blvd in Walterboro to complete a short application, or fill out the online application here. A SLED background check is required by SC State Law for any persons joining a Fire Department. Presently, applicants must not have any felony convictions, nor be listed as a Convicted Sex Offender.

Applicants must successfully pass an annual physical exam (provided by the department at no cost), attend regular monthly training classes and respond to emergencies. Active members receive a limited benefits package.
