2/28/2010- Motor Vehicle Collision with Fatality (C-shift)

Stations 1 and 19 responded to a fatal high speed MVC in the 5200 block of Jefferies Highway, Sunday afternoon 28-February at 1321. Witness stated a northbound full size van left the roadway, over-corrected and entered the ditch on the southbound side of the road. The van struck two pine trees which peeled off the roof before it over-turned. The 27 year old female driver was ejected from the vehicle and died of multiple trauma injuries. 2/27/2010- Structure Fire (B-shift)

Stations 1, 2, 6, 12, 22 and 25 responded to a structure fire next door to 1552 Magwood Bryant Road in the Green Pond Community at 1552, Saturday afternoon 27-February. The caller to 9-1-1 reported smoke and fire coming from the home. Engine 6 and Medic 6 arrived within three minutes to find a singlewide mobile home fully involved with flames blowing across the roadway. The roof had already collapsed. Congratulations to Firefighter/Paramedic Pat Powell on the birth of his grandson Ian Heulon Powell (6.9 lbs. - 19 in. tall).

2/17/2010-

Congratulations to Firefighter/EMT Joseph Dunkle and his wife Sarah on the birth of their daughter, Natalie Brooke (7 lbs. - 18 in. tall).

Congratulations to Fire Marshal Roger Johnston and his wife Karen on the birth of their daughter, Summer Elizabeth (6 lbs. 14 oz.).

2/14/2010- Motor Vehicle Collision with Air Evac. (A-shift)

Stations 1, 18 and 26 responded to a two vehicle MVC in the intersection at Bells Crossroads (Bells Hwy./SC Hwy 64 and Lowcountry Hwy./US Hwy 21) at 1:50 PM Sunday 14-February. A small car pulled into the path of a southbound Carmichael’s LP gas truck. The large LP truck struck the small car in the passenger’s side door. The female driver of the car suffered multiple traumatic injuries, was rendered unconscious and she was trapped in the vehicle. Click here for more information.

 

2/12-13/2010- Weather Causes Multiple Calls (B&C Shifts)

Approximately seven inches of snow blanketed the Lowcountry Region Friday evening 12-February, starting around 17:00. As beautiful as the rare event was, it wreaked havoc for emergency services and power companies as the storm immobilized the Colleton County Area. Shortly after the snow began to fall, the motor vehicle collisions began. Most were single vehicle MVCs caused when cars lost control on the slick road surfaces. Click here for more information. 

 

2/10/2010- Motor Vehicle Collision with Air Evac. (C-shift)

Stations 7 and 26 responded to a single vehicle MVC on Johnsville Road near Fralix Road at 1607, Wednesday afternoon 10-Febraury. The northbound 1997 Buick Riviera left the roadway at a high rate of speed, over corrected and lost control. The car entered a ditch, rolled over eight times, ejecting the driver into a field. Bystanders told Firefighter-Paramedics the man was unconscious following the crash. Click here for more information.

 

2/10/2010-

The South Carolina Department of Transportation announces that there will be a closure of the bridge on S-15-64 over Indian Creek, located 10 miles northwest of Walterboro, SC on Hudson Mill Road.  The road will be closed from February 8, 2010 through April 16, 2010.  This closure is necessary for the bridge to be replaced.  A detour will be posted to direct motorists around this road closure.  If you have any questions or need further information, please contact Bridge Maintenance Engineer, Curtis Brice, at 740-1695.

2/9/2010-

The Lower State Firefighter’s Association quarterly meeting will be held Monday evening, February 22, 2010. The meeting will be held at the James Brandt Building, 398 Barnwell Hwy. in Allendale, SC. The program will feature Chief Tim Stephenson who will be making a presentation on a firefighter who was badly burned during a training exercise. If you have not seen this presentation, it is well worth the trip. The presentation covers the preparation for the training burn, actual video of the incident and the OSHA investigation. The New Life United Methodist Men of the Church are hosting a breakfast in honor of Public Safety Personnel. They have invited all Fire-Rescue personnel to a breakfast at the church this Saturday, February 6 from 0830 to 1200. This is in appreciation for your loyalty and support to our community. The church is located at 763 Green Pond Hwy. just south of Walterboro.

2/1/2010-

We offer condolences to the family of Station 7 Lieutenant David Sauls, Jr.  Lt. Sauls' mother Kathleen passed away Saturday morning.  A memorial service was held Sunday afternoon in Smoaks.
