Colleton County Fire-Rescue's Emergency Management Division (EMD) is responsible for developing emergency response plans and coordinating/implementing those plans during an emergency. EMD works closely with state and local officials in four key areas: Preparation, Mitigation, Response, and Recovery.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Colleton County Fire-Rescue's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is part of Fire-Rescue's Emergency Management Division and consists of volunteer personnel that are trained in disaster preparedness and basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.  Through CERT, Colleton County Fire-Rescue's capabilities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters are enhanced.  To volunteer for CERT, click here to apply. 


CERT members are trained to assist during emergencies/disasters in various roles.  Those roles include the following:

CERT meetings are held at 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM on the second Tuesday of each month at the Emergency Operations Center 108 Simmons Street, Walterboro).

Changes to CERT meeting dates, times and/or locations will be announced via email and text message.

  • Assisting the DSS and the Red Cross (ESF-6/11) at the Evacuation Shelter
  • Assisting Animal Services (ESF-17) at the pet shelter
  • Assisting Transportation (ESF-1) in relocating those without transportation means to evacuation shelters.
  • Assisting Donated Goods/Volunteer Services (ESF-18) with the operation of Points of Distribution (POD's) or coordinating volunteer activities.
  • Assisting with information distribution and coordination in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
  • Assisting with Special Projects (Public Service Functions, Safety Campaigns, LEPC Activities such as Hazardous Materials Transportation Studies)
